I used to believe this apartment complex was just another standard student housing option. Then I watched how they treated my friend, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to my worst enemy.
She reported a clear policy violation—her roommates threw a disruptive party, security had to intervene. Instead of enforcing their own rules, management did absolutely nothing. Then, when she became the target of harassment for speaking up, management STILL did nothing.
Worse? My friend has documented... disabilities, and instead of accommodating her, they chose to ignore her official university paperwork and demand a fake “acceptance letter” that doesn’t even exist. When she asked for help after being harassed, their response? “Have you considered therapy?” Because why fix the problem when you can just gaslight the victim?
If you’re an international student, have a disability, or just expect management to follow basic fairness standards—look elsewhere. This place isn’t just mismanaged. It’s a joke.

My experience here has been increasingly disappointing. The mailroom is an absolute mess; my packages have been missing so many times that I've actually started to send my mail to my friend's apartment. There was a flood that set the fire alarm off twice the night before a major exam. We've found cockroaches in our apartment and it was not properly cleaned upon move-in. Maintenance does not respect privacy and will barge into apartments unannounced. Our dryer does not work properly. Management... is unhelpful and condescending.

Every week there was a problem where the water, electricity, heating, trash chute, etc was unavailable and often would not be fixed for several days to weeks. Management will straight up lie to you and always overcharges. It takes several phone calls and emails to get the extra charges reversed (they are usually not available by phone). They also walk into apartments at any time without notice and try to steal items from residents. As for the apartment itself, it is old but ok, however it is... quite noisy, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when the nearby hotel has loud parties that go on well into the night. You will need noise cancelling headphones to sleep.

New management has done amazing things for 929/Essential. Everywhere I go things are being updated, renovated or simply enhanced. 929 had a name change and with it a bunch of new faces that seem determined to make this the best community in Baltimore - so far - they seem to be hitting the mark.
Nice Job!

Loud, dirty, cheap construction and appliances, frequently issues with water, AC, and obtaining packages. Shady management practices.

Hello Reviewer,
I'm responding on 04/01/2024 as a member of the new management and operations team at "The Essential". While we were not the operators of the former community "929" we always regret to hear that someone had an unpleasant experience.... Anytime a resident is unhappy it reflects negative on the entire industry as well as tarnishes what should be the happiest times for a student.
We welcome you to come to "The Essential" and meet with members of our team. We're taking the feedback you left for previous operators, and utilizing it to take preventative steps to help try and ensure our residents do not experience the issues you mentioned under prior management. We recognize this may be the same facility - but our team consists of the best and brightest - determined to take "Essential" steps to ensure you are always taken care of.
On behalf of the team here, I wish you the best in your academic endevors. I hope that if you are in the area that you will stop by and say hello and allow us to show you the many changes we have underway.
Best,
BilliePaige
